The hospital's official institutional history describes its development from two Fuzhou hospitals founded in 1860 and 1877. It is a provincial comprehensive tertiary hospital affiliated with Fujian Medical University. Official profiles distinguish Yushan and Qishan locations and the associated Pingtan institution. Despite the English word Union, this is separate from Beijing PUMCH and Wuhan Union Hospital.
