Fudan Eye and ENT Hospital Ophthalmology: Myopia, Glaucoma and Cataract Teams

Fudan Eye and ENT Hospital's ophthalmology department is a large academic eye service in Shanghai with distinct myopia and refractive, glaucoma and optic-nerve, and high-myopia cataract work. This article explains those three directions, the named clinicians and research behind them, and the practical questions an overseas patient should settle with the treating team before planning care in China.

What kind of eye hospital this is

The Eye and ENT Hospital is a Fudan University-affiliated specialist hospital in Shanghai. Its institutional history records national key-discipline and clinical-key-specialty recognition for ophthalmology and ENT, alongside research laboratories, clinical quality-control work and specialist training. This article focuses on eye care rather than the hospital's separate hearing and rhinology programs.

The hospital's ophthalmology specialty placed third in the Fudan project's 2023 national specialty reputation list. This is a historical department-level reference, not a ranking of the myopia, glaucoma and cataract programs or of individual surgeons. The clinical question remains important when choosing which group should review an enquiry.

For an overseas patient, the useful question is narrower: which of the hospital's documented clinical directions matches your eye problem, and what records would let that team assess it? The three directions below are genuinely different in what they assess and what they research.

Myopia and refractive work under Zhou Xingtao

Zhou Xingtao is identified in a May 2025 Fudan Shanghai Medical College report as the hospital's president and as chair of the national ophthalmology medical quality control expert committee. The same report describes his work in myopia prevention and minimally invasive refractive care, an Asia-Pacific refractive and SMILE training centre, laser-related equipment research and development, and school, hospital and family vision-health projects. He holds a personal National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize as a main contributor, and national honours including Most Beautiful Doctor and an outstanding physician recognition.

This combination of clinical work, professional training and prevention is useful context for a myopia enquiry. Someone seeking advice after a prior refractive procedure has a different question from a family concerned about childhood myopia. Clarify the purpose of the assessment first, then ask which information the appropriate team needs before considering any particular technique.

A June 2026 Fudan student feature supervised by Zhou describes two very different research strands. One is corneal stromal lenticule proteomics comparing higher and lower myopia, with COL1A1 and CDH11 identified as potentially relevant proteins. The other is a retrospective analysis of youth refraction follow-up data beginning in 2005, used to study myopia prediction. A separate experimental branch uses a mouse model of corneal dystrophy. These are laboratory and observational studies, not a validated personal prediction tool or an offer of gene editing.

Glaucoma and optic-nerve research under Sun Xinghuai

Sun Xinghuai is documented as a professor, chief physician and doctoral supervisor working on the clinical and basic science of glaucoma and optic-nerve disease. A March 2019 Fudan biography records that he was then the hospital's president; the hospital presidency should therefore be read as a historical role. The same page notes a State Council special allowance and his work as an ophthalmology textbook editor.

His representative papers illustrate the research range. A 2014 paper reported associations between common genetic variants near ABCA1 and PMM2 and primary open-angle glaucoma in human participants. A 2015 study described mitochondrial DNA damage and retinal ganglion cell loss in a rat model. Both are mechanism and association research. Neither makes a personal genetic test a standard indication, and neither supports a claim that optic-nerve damage can be reversed in patients.

The glaucoma program also has a public-education record. In January 2017 a Fudan report described the 2016 National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize awarded to the project Understanding Glaucoma, Overcoming Glaucoma, led by Sun. The associated public book, first published in 2012 and later revised, used clinician-drawn illustrations to cover screening, diagnosis, intervention, rehabilitation, psychosocial and daily-care education, alongside community health-record work and clinician training. That is a project and team honour, not evidence of a fixed success rate.

High-myopia cataract: Lu Yi and He Wenwen

Cataract surgery in a highly myopic eye raises specific planning questions, and the hospital documents a dedicated research and clinical direction for it. A May 2023 Fudan report on the 2022 Shanghai science and technology awards records a Science and Technology Progress First Prize for the project Precision Treatment Technology and Application for High Myopia Cataract, led by Lu Yi. The described work includes disease-specific data and a sample bank, mechanistic research, AI-assisted intraocular lens power calculation and precision-surgery development. The honour belongs to the named project and team.

He Wenwen is documented in an April 2026 Fudan profile as an associate chief physician working on the clinical prevention and treatment of high-myopia cataract and its complications, trained with Lu Yi. The profile describes her as a core contributor to the Zhu-Lu AI-assisted intraocular lens power calculation formula published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology, and as working with a disease-specific database, a National Natural Science Foundation young scholar project and models of onset and complication risk. Her clinical work spans the Fenyang and Pudong campuses.

The formula and database connect clinical planning with research into high-myopia-associated cataract and its complications. They illustrate why disease-specific evidence matters. A named calculation tool does not select an implant automatically: the surgical team must explain the assessment, available options and uncertainties for the individual eye.

How the research shapes patient questions

The three programs involve different kinds of evidence. The myopia work combines clinical follow-up, tissue-protein investigation and equipment development. The glaucoma studies include human genetic associations and rat-model mechanisms. The cataract projects connect clinical data with calculation and surgical-planning research. These distinctions help explain the different questions each group investigates.

Human follow-up data can reveal patterns over time, while laboratory work explores possible biological explanations. An association in a study is not an individual diagnosis. Likewise, an animal model can test a mechanism without establishing a treatment for patients. Ask whether a proposed assessment draws on routine clinical practice, an established tool or a research question still being investigated.

For an established eye diagnosis, identify what remains unresolved and what another opinion would add. That might be clarification of previous findings or discussion of an existing treatment proposal. The receiving clinicians can then explain what can be assessed from records and what needs direct examination, rather than starting with a requested procedure.

Practical decisions before you enquire

Organise the diagnosis already recorded by your clinicians, the history of eye treatment and the question requiring another opinion. Ask which existing reports or images should be supplied and which require translation. Confirm the appropriate campus and proposed assessment before travel; a hospital profile is not confirmation of acceptance or an appointment.

Clarify the written assessment scope, language support and follow-up arrangements with the receiving team after acceptance. Distinguish clinical decisions from travel coordination, and avoid planning around an assumed procedure or recovery date. Sudden or worsening eye symptoms require prompt local medical assessment rather than waiting for overseas arrangements.

Eye care and eye surgery in China

Independent support for an eye-care enquiry

ChinaSpecialistCare can help organise an eye-care enquiry, prepare records and coordinate assessment arrangements after hospital acceptance. We are independent of the hospital and cannot guarantee a named clinician, procedure or visual outcome. A brief initial enquiry is free; an optional proxy consultation is not required for that enquiry.
