What kind of cancer center this is
Founded on 1 March 1931, the hospital is directly affiliated with Fudan University and is a tertiary specialist cancer institution under National Health Commission budget management. Its overview describes disease-specific multidisciplinary care, teaching, research, prevention and whole-course management. It operates Xuhui and Pudong campuses and works with Shanghai Proton Heavy Ion Hospital; the appropriate assessment location needs confirmation for each accepted case.
In the Fudan project's 2023 national specialty reputation list, its oncology specialty placed third. This is a historical hospital-specialty reference, not a separate ranking for breast care, unknown-primary diagnostics or individual clinicians. The two programs discussed here address different clinical questions within the hospital's broader cancer service.
Shao Zhimin and Jiang Yizhou: breast expertise and honors
Shao Zhimin's work links clinical breast cancer care, molecular subtyping and laboratory investigation. A February 2024 university feature named him as head of the Fudan Cancer Institute and director of breast surgery and major surgery at that time. Later, in December 2025, Fudan identified him as chief expert of the breast multidisciplinary team. This provides a dated account of his roles rather than an assumed permanent staffing chart.
Shao received the inaugural Shanghai Outstanding Talent recognition reported in February 2024. The same profile lists a National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize as first contributor, alongside national labor and medical honors. It describes his contributions to breast cancer guidelines, multicenter studies and translating molecular classification into clinical research. An award recognizes work already undertaken; it does not determine a new patient's treatment.
Jiang Yizhou was identified in May 2025 as hospital vice president, breast chief physician and doctoral supervisor. He received the 2025 New Era Youth Pioneer Award. The university also records earlier National Youth Post Expert, Shanghai Youth May Fourth pacesetter, Zhong Nanshan youth innovation and DAMO Young Fellow honors. His clinical and translational work includes subtype-based triple-negative breast cancer research and patient education.
Triple-negative breast cancer: subtyping and immune resistance
The breast research program has developed a four-subtype molecular framework for triple-negative breast cancer. It is a way of investigating differences within that particular disease group, not a classification of every breast cancer. The research connects molecular information with clinical questions about why apparently similar tumors can behave differently or respond differently to treatment.
In June 2025, Shao and Jiang's team reported Nature Medicine work using human multimodal information and artificial intelligence to study antigen-presenting mast cells and immunotherapy response. Wu Songyang, Jin Xi and Liu Yin were co-first authors. Human-data associations were followed by laboratory, mouse and patient-derived organoid investigations of immune mechanisms.
The investigators also developed the Renaissance clinical-research platform for immunotherapy-resistant metastatic triple-negative breast cancer. Its investigation of sodium cromoglycate combined with immunotherapy belongs to a research setting, not self-treatment with an allergy medicine. The report discusses a path from clinical observation through biological investigation and back to a clinical question. It is not confirmation that the proposed combination is suitable or available for a new enquiry.
CITRINE: a separate early-stage adjuvant research question
CITRINE concerns high-risk early triple-negative breast cancer after surgery, rather than the resistant metastatic disease investigated in Renaissance. A December 2025 university report described its BMJ publication as an investigator-initiated, randomized, open-label phase III trial. It tested adding carboplatin to an anthracycline-and-taxane adjuvant chemotherapy backbone.
The study examined recurrence, survival and adverse effects in a defined high-risk population. The report also identified Wang Zhonghua as deputy director of breast surgery and discussed hematologic toxicity, including neutropenia and anemia. These details matter when weighing a research result: studying a more intensive approach also means examining the burden of treatment.
This work shows how the team separates disease settings and risk groups instead of treating every breast cancer as one condition. A person who encounters a trial name online should identify whether it concerns treatment before surgery, after surgery or for metastatic disease. Those settings cannot be exchanged, and the treating clinicians must determine the relevance to an individual case.
Hu Xichun and Luo Zhiguo: cancer of unknown primary
Cancer of unknown primary raises a different diagnostic problem: determining the likely tissue of origin when the primary site remains uncertain. Hu Xichun and Luo Zhiguo's Fudan CUP-001 study, published in The Lancet Oncology in July 2024, investigated whether a 90-gene expression assay could guide site-specific therapy compared with empirical chemotherapy. The university described it as a prospective randomized controlled trial.
This is a linked diagnostic-and-treatment question, rather than a test guaranteed to locate every original tumor. The important distinction is between a predicted tissue of origin and a clinically confirmed diagnosis. For a records enquiry, explain what previous pathology has concluded, what remains uncertain and what decision another assessment should help resolve. The receiving team can explain whether further testing would add useful information.
An April 2026 university report identifies Wang Hongxia as medical oncology director and Hu as its senior chief expert and a project principal investigator. This newer account avoids relying on older descriptions of departmental leadership. It also describes a national science-and-technology project on breast cancer prevention, multimodal cohorts and risk-stratified assessment.
The prevention program brings clinical investigators together with public-health and artificial-intelligence specialists. It plans shared data resources and randomized validation of screening approaches for Chinese populations. These are project objectives, not a completed clinical outcome or an automatic screening recommendation for someone travelling from another country.
Preparing a focused breast or unknown-primary case enquiry
For a breast cancer enquiry, state the diagnosis already recorded, treatment received and the unresolved question. Clarify whether another opinion is sought on the existing treatment proposal, a pathology interpretation or a research finding encountered online. For unknown-primary cancer, explain the sequence of investigations and where the diagnostic uncertainty remains, rather than requesting a particular gene assay at the outset.
Ask which existing documents need translation and whether any pathology materials should be considered for review. Confirm the appropriate team, campus, language support and written assessment scope before arranging travel. Neither an academic biography nor a published trial confirms an appointment, recruitment place or acceptance for treatment. Urgent clinical needs should be managed locally rather than delayed for overseas planning.
Independent coordination for an oncology assessment
ChinaSpecialistCare can help organise records, clarify the case enquiry and coordinate assessment arrangements after hospital acceptance. We are independent of the hospital and cannot guarantee a named specialist, research place or treatment outcome. An initial enquiry is free; an optional proxy consultation is not required for that initial enquiry.
