Fuwai Hospital and its cardiac surgery specialty
Fuwai Hospital, part of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, is a specialist cardiovascular hospital in Beijing and the location of the National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases. Its institutional role combines clinical care, research, prevention and professional training. Cardiac surgery and cardiovascular research sit within that specialist setting, rather than being presented as an isolated surgical service.
The Fudan 2023 national cardiac-surgery specialty reputation list placed Fuwai first. This is a historical specialty-wide reference, not the latest annual ranking or a separate ranking of a surgeon or subspecialty. For a patient comparing hospitals, it offers institutional context; the next question is which clinical direction is relevant to the problem already identified.
Coronary bypass, valve surgery and advanced heart failure
Coronary artery bypass grafting is a documented clinical and research direction. Xianqiang Wang works on bypass surgery and strategies for its evaluation; Shengshou Hu has studied coronary surgery, outcome registries, risk assessment, and minimally invasive or hybrid coronary approaches. Someone who has already received a bypass recommendation can ask how the team would compare surgery with catheter-based or medical treatment, and how conduit selection and individual risk would affect the proposed plan.
Valve surgery needs a more specific discussion than simply asking whether a small incision is possible. Wang lists valve disease and minimally invasive cardiac surgery among his directions. Sheng Liu works on mitral valve repair, including research questions about repeat intervention after degenerative mitral disease and re-repair versus replacement after a previous repair has failed. A patient with mitral regurgitation can ask whether repair is anatomically feasible, what the alternatives are, and how previous treatment changes the assessment.
Surgical treatment and mechanical circulatory support for advanced heart failure form a different pathway. Wang has a registry and quality-control project concerning implanted left ventricular assist devices; Hu researches artificial hearts and ventricular assistance; Liu also works on advanced heart-failure surgery. These activities describe expertise and research scope. They do not establish that a particular device, trial or transplantation pathway is available to an international patient. Suitability and the treatment that can actually be offered require an individual clinical assessment.
Hu also works on complex congenital cardiac disease. A congenital condition raises a different clinical question from acquired coronary or valve disease; it should be identified clearly in the initial case summary rather than absorbed into a general adult-surgery enquiry.
Current leadership and specialist teams
Xianqiang Wang is a chief physician and doctoral supervisor. His official Peking Union Medical College profile lists him as director of the Adult Cardiac Surgery Center, director of Adult Cardiac Surgery Ward Five, and deputy director of the special-needs center. His directions include coronary disease, valve disease, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, surgical treatment of end-stage heart failure and perioperative blood management. The profile also records work on bypass-graft flow characteristics and risk prediction.
Sheng Liu is a chief physician and doctoral supervisor, deputy chair of the surgical management committee, deputy director of the adult surgery center and director of Adult Cardiac Surgery Ward Three. Alongside mitral repair and advanced heart-failure surgery, his research includes surgery for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension and perioperative acute kidney injury. These are distinct areas to match against a specific diagnosis, rather than treating every senior surgeon as interchangeable.
Shengshou Hu is a cardiovascular surgeon and doctoral supervisor whose official profile lists him as director of the National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases and president of Fuwai Hospital. His academic work includes coronary surgery, complex congenital disease, surgical risk evaluation and mechanical circulatory support. These roles describe leadership and academic scope, not a commitment that a named expert will assess or operate on a particular patient.
A concrete research example from coronary bypass surgery
The three-year follow-up of the PATENCY randomised trial was published in BMJ on 30 April 2025. It compared no-touch with conventional saphenous-vein harvesting during isolated coronary bypass surgery. Fuwai surgeons Xianqiang Wang, Wei Feng and Shengshou Hu were among the authors; the results came from multiple Chinese centres, not Fuwai alone.
No-touch harvesting preserves tissue around the vein. At three years, vein-graft occlusion was lower in that group, but all-cause mortality, cardiac mortality and the overall major cardiac and cerebrovascular composite did not show significant differences. Leg-wound complications matter when considering the trade-offs. Follow-up CT was not available for every participant, and differences in surgical practice affect generalisation.
The study helps frame questions about conduit choice, harvesting technique, wound risk and long-term graft follow-up. It does not by itself determine that an individual should undergo bypass or receive a particular technique.
Academic honours and team achievements
Hu was elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2013. His official faculty profile also records the 2012 Ho Leung Ho Lee Science and Technology Progress Award. These are personal academic honours, separate from the hospital specialty reputation and from awards attached to a research team.
Wang's official profile records a 2022 award entry for the Beijing science-and-technology progress first-prize project on establishing and applying key heart-transplantation techniques. It lists Wang as a team contributor, ranked twelfth, not a sole award recipient. This entry belongs to Wang's record, not Hu's. The achievement does not establish transplantation eligibility or access for international patients.
Academic recognition provides context about specialist experience. An individual treatment decision still needs the clinical team to explain expected benefit, risk and alternatives for the actual case.
Practical questions before an overseas surgical assessment
If a local doctor has already recommended surgery, begin with a concise summary of the diagnosis, previous operations or interventions, and the decision that needs clarification. The question might be whether a mitral valve could be repaired, how coronary treatment options should be compared, or what further assessment is relevant to advanced heart failure.
Clarify which operation is under consideration, the main alternatives, what existing images and reports can establish, and what might need assessment in person. Ask the receiving team whether additional testing is needed and which existing records can be used. A fixed test list should not be treated as a universal requirement for every patient.
Follow-up deserves attention before travel is settled: how graft or valve function would be monitored, how findings would reach the cardiologist at home, and how care would continue if surgery were not advised. Confirm the actual campus, language support and admission arrangements for the proposed assessment. Without a defined clinical plan, a fixed hospital stay or return-flight date would be premature.
CSC support for a surgical enquiry
CSC can help organise a case summary, prepare a specialist appointment enquiry, and coordinate interpretation or hospital companion support where agreed. We are an independent coordinator, not Fuwai Hospital’s official representative. The hospital and its clinicians decide acceptance and treatment suitability; a named expert or clinical result is not guaranteed.
