Fuwai Hospital and cardiovascular disease care
Fuwai is a specialist cardiovascular hospital in Beijing, linked to the National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, with clinical, research and teaching functions. It placed first in the Fudan 2023 national cardiovascular-disease specialty reputation list. That historical specialty-wide ranking does not separately rank coronary intervention, heart failure or an individual clinician.
Rather than treating the hospital as a single general heart clinic, consider what is already diagnosed, what remains uncertain and which team’s work most closely matches that uncertainty. The directions discussed here are coronary assessment and intervention, cardiometabolic disease, and heart failure or cardiomyopathy. They do not represent every clinical unit at Fuwai.
Three disease directions to distinguish
Coronary assessment and intervention is one direction. Kefei Dou’s official profile includes complex high-risk coronary intervention, chronic total occlusion, intervention risk assessment and device research. Someone who already has coronary angiography or a recommendation for a stent can ask whether intervention is necessary, what technical issues need consideration and how medical or surgical alternatives would be compared. A research interest is not a treatment selection for an individual patient.
Cardiometabolic work concerns metabolic abnormalities and related intervention in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Dou directs the cardiometabolic center, and his team studies standardised, precise lipid management. For someone seeking advice about long-term risk-factor management, that is a different discussion from whether a procedure is needed. Whether an overseas assessment could add useful information to treatment already underway should be considered in the context of the existing care.
Heart failure and cardiomyopathy form another pathway. Yuhui Zhang’s official profile describes standardised chronic heart-failure care and the diagnosis and treatment of different cardiomyopathies. For a person with recurrent heart failure, changes in cardiac function or an unclear cardiomyopathy diagnosis, the question may be whether the diagnosis needs clarification, how previous treatment should be continued, or which clinical decision needs further assessment.
These directions are starting points for matching a real clinical question to documented expertise. They are not interchangeable lists of the best units, and the scope of a centre does not determine whether a particular person needs travel, a procedure or a different treatment.
Current leads and representative specialists
Kefei Dou is a chief physician and doctoral supervisor. His official profile lists him as chair of the internal-medicine management committee, director of the cardiometabolic center, deputy director of the coronary disease center and director of Coronary Disease Ward Five. His work connects complex coronary intervention with cardiometabolic research, explaining why the same professional remit can involve both procedural technique and long-term disease management.
Yuhui Zhang is a chief physician, professor and doctoral supervisor. Her Peking Union Medical College profile lists her as director of the heart-failure center and the heart-failure intensive care unit. Her clinical expertise includes standardised chronic heart-failure care and cardiomyopathy diagnosis and treatment. The question for an enquiry is whether that disease scope matches the issue in the patient’s existing records.
Runlin Gao is a cardiovascular physician, Fuwai researcher and doctoral supervisor. His work includes interventional cardiology, restenosis mechanisms and prevention, and coronary device development. His representative publications include population surveys, clinical trials and preclinical device research. Their different designs address different questions; an academic profile is not a substitute for identifying the team that would actually review a case.
What specific research projects address
Dou’s project list includes coronary shockwave pretreatment research for severe calcification beginning in 2022, and a standardised precise lipid-management project beginning in 2021. These concern different levels of care: a technical issue in complex coronary intervention and long-term management of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. A project title does not establish a result or confirm that the technology is currently available for a particular patient.
Zhang’s team completed the China heart-failure registry and established a national heart-failure data platform. Its work spans epidemiology, basic and clinical medicine, and bioinformatics. A registry organises real-world clinical information and can inform understanding of disease and clinical practice. It is not itself a randomised trial proving that a particular therapy improves an individual’s outcome.
Gao’s representative work includes the China Hypertension Survey published in Circulation in 2018, based on data collected from 2012 to 2015. The 2018 RESTORE SVD China trial compared a drug-coated balloon with a drug-eluting stent in small-vessel coronary disease. A 2019 study of an iron bioresorbable coronary scaffold was preclinical research in porcine coronary arteries. These are distinct evidence types. Animal research is not an established human treatment option, and the title alone does not report a comparison’s result.
For a patient, this work can help sharpen the question: is the uncertainty about the need for intervention, a treatment strategy, or longer-term risk and heart-failure management? The research provides background for that conversation; clinicians must still explain the benefits and risks relevant to the individual findings.
Personal honours and research recognition
Gao was elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999. This is personal academic recognition, distinct from a hospital’s position in a particular year’s specialty reputation list.
Dou’s official profile records selection for the National Hundred-Thousand-Ten-Thousand Talents Project in 2020 and recognition as a young or middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions, followed by selection for a State Council special allowance in 2023.
Zhang’s profile includes the 2019 Guo Zhi Ming Yi young rising-star recognition and innovation-leading talent recognition from the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2023. Her 2024 Huaxia Medical Science and Technology second-prize entry is a team project award: she is listed as second contributor, and the awarding organisation is the China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care. These distinctions provide professional context, while the team’s actual disease scope remains central to choosing an assessment direction.
Defining the question before a cardiology enquiry
Start with a short summary of the diagnosed condition, what remains uncertain and the decision you hope an assessment will help clarify. For a coronary question, explain whether angiography and a local treatment recommendation already exist. For heart failure or cardiomyopathy, outline earlier investigations, treatment and recent changes. For risk-factor management, describe current treatment and the relevant available results. Organise the records around the question rather than sending an unstructured archive.
Clarify which disease-focused team should review the material, what the existing records can answer, what important information is missing and whether an in-person assessment is necessary. Any additional imaging or other tests should be decided by the clinical team, not prescribed as a universal list in an article.
Do not assume that an enquiry must lead to a stent, a new device or travel to China. Further assessment may involve continued medical treatment, diagnostic clarification or comparison of other options. Urgent or significantly worsening symptoms need care where the patient is located; an overseas planning enquiry is not an emergency pathway.
Before confirming travel, clarify the actual campus, language assistance, record transmission, appointment arrangements and written fee scope for the particular assessment. Without a defined arrangement, fixed waiting times, hospital stays and return dates should not be promised.
CSC assistance with a disease-focused enquiry
CSC can help organise records around a specific clinical question, prepare a specialist appointment enquiry, and coordinate interpretation or hospital companion support where agreed. We are an independent coordinator, not Fuwai Hospital’s official representative. Hospital clinicians decide acceptance, suitability and treatment; a named expert or clinical outcome is not guaranteed.
