Hospital and department context
Nanfang Hospital is the teaching hospital affiliated with Southern Medical University in Guangzhou. Its gastroenterology department appears among the university's national clinical key specialties, alongside plastic surgery and hematology in that announcement. In the 2023 Fudan national specialty-reputation list, the department is recorded at position 10. That is a dated historical reputation listing, not a current 2026 ranking, and it says nothing about individual doctors or subspecialty standings. Treat it as background on how the department was regarded in that year, not as a measure of your own likely outcome.
Documented clinical directions: endoscopy, IBD and neuroendocrine tumours
The department's documented work clusters around several distinct directions, and they are not interchangeable. One is endoscopic assessment and treatment of early gastrointestinal lesions, including early cancer screening. A second is inflammatory bowel disease, described in hospital-authored material as assessment, treatment and follow-up. A third is gastrointestinal bleeding, where a September 2025 university report describes service development rather than a published outcome record. A fourth is neuroendocrine tumours of the stomach, intestine and pancreas, addressed through multidisciplinary case assessment.
Each direction implies a different kind of question. If your records describe a lesion found at endoscopy, the relevant discussion is about what the lesion is, whether it has been adequately sampled, and what further endoscopic assessment the treating team considers appropriate. If you have IBD, the discussion is about disease extent, current treatment and how follow-up would be organised. If a neuroendocrine tumour is suspected or confirmed, the question is which specialties need to look at the pathology and imaging together. These are different pathways, and a general enquiry that names only "stomach problems" will not help a department route your file.
The department's early-lesion endoscopy interest is documented in the context of screening and early cancer work. That does not mean every overseas patient should expect a screening endoscopy, and it does not establish which lesions can be managed endoscopically. Those are decisions for the treating clinicians after they see the actual reports and images. Similarly, the gastrointestinal bleeding direction in the 2025 report describes service development; active or recent significant bleeding is a local emergency matter, not something to plan around an international trip.
The neuroendocrine tumour work is documented through a March 2017 meeting held at the gastroenterology department, focused on multidisciplinary case assessment of gastric, intestinal and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours. That is a dated example of clinical collaboration, not a standing named clinic that an overseas patient can book, and not a claim that every patient follows the same pathway. If your question concerns a neuroendocrine tumour, ask the department whether a multidisciplinary review is part of how it would assess your records.
People and dated roles
Several clinicians appear in the university's own reports, and the dates matter. Liu Side was, at the time of an April 2021 announcement, professor, doctoral supervisor, department chief and academic leader, and was selected in the ninth national outstanding young and middle-aged health contributor programme. Those are dated roles. The 2021 record should not be read as a statement about who holds the chief position in 2026. The same announcement describes his clinical research in colonoscopic detection of early colorectal neoplasia and minimally invasive endoscopic assessment.
Zhi Fachao is described in a September 2025 hospital-authored profile as a distinguished professor, gastrointestinal academic leader and recipient of a State Council allowance. The same report describes collaboration between the main hospital and the Zengcheng campus, with Li Aimin named there as Zengcheng director. That report does not set out fixed clinic days or a direct booking route, and it does not promise that both campuses offer identical services. If campus matters to you, ask which site the relevant team works from for your specific problem.
Chen Ye appears as deputy in the March 2017 neuroendocrine meeting report, alongside Liu Side as chief at that time. That is a dated record of who took part in a case-assessment forum, not a statement about current titles. Bai Yang is described in a hospital-authored report dated 14 September 2015 as then deputy director of the gastroenterology department and chief physician, with endoscopic assessment and treatment interests in early gastrointestinal tumours and precancerous lesions. The same report records endoscopy teaching and books compiled by Liu Side, Bai Yang and Li Mingsong, including an illustrated endoscopy training textbook. That is a historical teaching collaboration, not a 2026 appointment and not a clinical-trial result. If you are trying to reach a particular clinician, ask the department which team currently handles your problem rather than working from an older title.
Research and what it does and does not tell a patient
Research records here mix clinical service, teaching and engineering, and the distinction changes what you can reasonably ask for. A patient with a lesion found at endoscopy wants to know whether the department's documented early-lesion endoscopy interest means someone will review the procedure report, the histopathology and the images and say whether further endoscopic assessment is appropriate. A patient with IBD wants to know how assessment, treatment and follow-up are organised for someone arriving with existing records. Neither question is answered by pointing to a research programme, and neither is a request the department is obliged to accept before it sees the file. The honest position is that the treating team decides suitability after review, and that a documented clinical direction tells you who might reasonably look at your case, not what the outcome will be.
A different kind of record is the student innovation project reported by the university on 5 August 2025. A provincial student innovation silver award went to a cloud capsule endoscopy project in the first clinical faculty, with Wang Yusi as student leader and Luo Xiaobei, Liu Side and Wang Yingfeng as mentors. The work concerns a portable capsule and an AI-assisted image database with cloud screening coordination. This is device and software engineering in a student competition context. It does not establish that a capsule device is approved for clinical use, that it can be done at home or from overseas, or that it substitutes for a therapeutic endoscopy. If your records mention a capsule study, name the specific test and what it was looking for, because the report and the questions differ from those for a standard gastroscopy or colonoscopy.
The 2017 neuroendocrine meeting is a third kind of evidence: a documented multidisciplinary case-assessment forum, not a trial and not a published outcome study. It shows that clinicians from different specialties were brought together to discuss these tumours. It does not tell you what any individual patient's assessment should include, and it does not support claims about survival or cost. If you are considering care in China for a neuroendocrine tumour, the practical question is whether the department would review your pathology and imaging in a multidisciplinary format, and what it would need to do so.
Honours and how to read them
Distinctions in these records belong to specific people and projects, not to the department as a whole. Liu Side's 2021 selection as a national outstanding young and middle-aged health contributor is a personal honour recorded in a university announcement; the same announcement notes a State Council allowance, the national New Century Talent programme, Pearl River Scholar status, a Guangdong medical leading talent designation and a Guangdong Good Doctor recognition. It also records a Guangdong Science and Technology Progress First Prize as first contributor and a university technology fair Special Gold, without award years in that report. Those should not be given dates the source does not provide.
Zhi Fachao's State Council allowance and distinguished professorship come from the September 2025 hospital-authored profile. The capsule project's silver award is a student team honour with named mentors, not a clinical accreditation. Keep these separate: an academic membership or teaching recognition is not evidence that a treatment works, and a project award is not a regulatory approval.
Useful visit decisions before you enquire
Start with the question your records can actually answer. For an endoscopic lesion, ask whether the team would review the procedure report, the histopathology and any images, and what it would need to judge whether further endoscopic assessment is appropriate. For IBD, ask how the department structures assessment, treatment and follow-up for patients arriving with existing records, and what it would want from your current clinician. For a neuroendocrine tumour, ask whether multidisciplinary review is part of assessment. Ask which campus the relevant team works from, and confirm any language, document or scheduling question with the hospital rather than assuming a rule.
How ChinaSpecialistCare can help
ChinaSpecialistCare can help an overseas patient prepare a gastroenterology enquiry: summarising the diagnosis and main question, identifying missing records, and coordinating a specialist appointment or, where appropriate, a records-based opinion. The treating hospital decides suitability and scheduling, and its fees are separate from our coordination fees.
