A teaching-hospital department with several clinical directions
The department is part of Southern Medical University's Nanfang Hospital and is listed among its national clinical key specialties. This places plastic surgery within a teaching-hospital setting rather than a stand-alone beauty clinic. The department's clinical work and its academic programs include different interests, so a request about one problem should identify the relevant direction.
In the Fudan 2023 national specialty reputation list, Nanfang's plastic surgery specialty was third. This is a historical department-level reference, not a current ranking of hair surgery, fat grafting or an individual clinician. The more useful detail for an assessment is how the documented programs differ and which question a particular team would review.
Documented clinical directions beyond hair and fat
A 2023 hospital feature describes hair transplantation, fat medicine, eye, nose, breast and ear surgery, facial contouring and skin-laser work. These are separate clinical directions within the broader department. Hair and fat-related work receive particular attention in the hospital's academic accounts, but the department's scope extends beyond those two fields.
That breadth can matter when a concern crosses the wording of a single procedure. Someone asking about facial contour may have a different assessment question from someone asking about hair-bearing skin or a previous breast procedure. State the concern and what has already been assessed, then ask which program would review it. An initial enquiry should establish the proposed assessment, not assume that the title of a subspecialty selects a treatment.
Clinical contributors and the development of the team
Gao Jianhua's role in the department's development includes clinical leadership and professional education. The hospital's 2023 feature records that she stepped down from department leadership in 2010 and subsequently emphasized developing younger colleagues. Her previous professional-association offices are part of that academic history, rather than a current department-director designation.
Lu Feng's March 2025 university biography identifies him as chief physician, professor and doctoral supervisor in Nanfang plastic and cosmetic surgery. His clinical interests include comprehensive facial rejuvenation, facial fat grafting, breast fat grafting and body contouring. The profile also records leadership in fat-related professional groups and cosmetic and plastic-surgery physician organizations. These are distinct clinical and academic responsibilities.
Hu Zhiqi and Miao Yong are associated with hair-related research in the university's 2026 mentor directory. Hu's listed direction is hair transplantation, while Miao's includes alopecia and follicle regeneration. Together with Lu's fat-related work, these entries identify different research interests within the specialty. They do not establish who would be assigned to a new patient's consultation.
Hair transplantation and follicle research are not the same thing
Clinical hair transplantation and experimental follicle regeneration should be understood separately. The former is a documented department direction. The 2026 mentor directory describes Miao Yong's research in follicle biology, tissue engineering, organoids and links between follicles, skin and systemic disease. This laboratory and translational work is not an offer of an approved cell-based hair-regrowth treatment.
A 2014 academic-meeting report shows an earlier stage of that work. Hu Zhiqi was elected deputy of a hair-transplantation professional group, and Miao presented follicle-regeneration research. The date matters: the election records a professional role at that meeting, not proof that the same office continues today. The subject of a research presentation also differs from the scope of a clinical assessment.
For an enquiry about hair, explain the main concern, previous assessment and the decision on which another opinion is sought. Ask what the clinical team can review from existing information and what would require an in-person assessment. This keeps the discussion focused on a clinical question rather than a request for regeneration inferred from an academic headline.
Fat grafting: clinical work, biology and engineering
Fat grafting has a clinical, biological and engineering dimension in the official accounts. Lu's clinical interests concern facial and breast fat grafting and body contouring. His 2026 research listing concerns fat-related stem-cell biology and regeneration. These are connected interests, but experimental regeneration should not be treated as a routine clinical service.
At the 2014 meeting, Lu discussed granular fat grafting and fat regeneration, while Dong Ziqing presented work on graft biology and vascular reconstruction. These topics address what happens to tissue and its blood supply after grafting. They help explain the department's research focus without providing a personal estimate of graft survival or selecting a procedure for a new patient.
A separate university report from August 2025 describes a student engineering project on the fat-graft instrument workflow. Its mentors included Li Ye, Dong Ziqing, He Yunfan, Chen Yunzi and Jiang Wenqing; Lu Lingyan was the student project leader. Filtration and processing tools were part of that development. A prospective patient can ask what an actual proposed procedure involves, rather than assume a competition project identifies the equipment that would be used.
Department recognition and a different kind of innovation award
The hospital's 2023 department feature records a National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize and a Guangdong Science First Prize. These are department-related research recognitions. They should be attributed to the department's documented academic work, not automatically to Gao Jianhua, Lu Feng or a particular procedure.
The fat-graft workflow project received a silver award in the 2025 provincial student innovation competition. That distinction belongs to a student project and its academic development; it is not regulatory approval of a device or an award for patient outcomes. The national clinical key-specialty designation has another meaning again: recognition of the specialty within the hospital. These different achievements explain aspects of the department's development without answering an individual's suitability question.
Practical decisions for an overseas patient
Describe the main concern and earlier treatment, then ask which existing photographs or reports the relevant clinicians need. Clarify what can be assessed before travel, what requires examination and how any continuing care would be arranged. The hospital should confirm acceptance and the proposed assessment. A research profile does not substitute for the treating clinician's discussion of alternatives and risks.
ChinaSpecialistCare can help prepare a focused plastic-surgery enquiry, organise records and coordinate visit arrangements after hospital acceptance. We are independent of Nanfang Hospital and cannot guarantee a named clinician, procedure or result. A brief initial enquiry is free and does not require purchasing an optional proxy consultation.
