The department and its place in Chinese cardiology
West China Hospital's cardiology service did not begin as a standalone department. Luo Decheng founded a cardiovascular research room there in 1965, and cardiology became an independent department in 1986. Chen Mao has served as department director since 2013, a timeline stated on the hospital's own department page and confirmed in his separate clinical biography. The department holds national clinical key specialty status and a Sichuan cardiovascular quality-control role.
The department describes eight clinical groups: coronary heart disease, congenital heart disease, valve disease, electrophysiology, heart failure and devices, hypertension, critical care, and non-invasive assessment. That structure matters to an overseas patient because it shows where a specific problem is likely to sit, and which team a records-based question should reach. It does not tell you which group will accept your case; the hospital decides suitability after reviewing records.
For historical context only, the department appears at position 7 in the 2023 national specialty reputation list compiled by Fudan. That is a dated reference to the department as a whole. It is not a current 2026 ranking, and it says nothing about how any subspecialty or individual clinician compares.
What the valve, rhythm and heart-failure directions actually cover
The valve group works on structural heart disease, and Chen Mao's official clinical biography lists coronary intervention alongside structural and valve intervention, including aortic, mitral, tricuspid and pulmonary work. A 2021 hospital report describes how Chen Mao led the formation of a multidisciplinary valve team in 2012, with Feng Yuan from cardiology and Meng Wei from cardiac surgery as contributors. That report describes research combining multimodal imaging with anatomical and clinical questions, including strategies for bicuspid aortic valve TAVR, and device-engineering examples such as VenusA and Venibri alongside guideline and consensus work.
The electrophysiology program traces its origins to the 1980s. Huang Dejia is documented as its founder, Jiang Jian as academic leader, and Fu Hua as subgroup leader, with Cui Kaijun, Yang Qing and Hu Hongde named as core contributors. The program describes mapping and ablation work for arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation, left atrial appendage occlusion, and collaboration on pacing. An atrial fibrillation center and cardioembolic stroke program were established in 2018, and a provincial atrial fibrillation alliance in 2019.
The heart-failure and device program names Huang Dejia and subgroup leader Liu Xingbin on the checked hospital page. It describes pacemakers, physiologic and conduction-system pacing, cardiac resynchronisation therapy, implantable defibrillators, lead extraction and a syncope multidisciplinary team, together with device implantation and CRT training roles. The coronary group describes complex intervention including chronic total occlusion, intracoronary imaging and functional assessment, plus teaching and training work.
Who holds which role, and why the distinction matters
Overseas patients often search for a single famous name and assume that person will personally manage every stage. The documented roles at West China are more specific. Chen Mao is director of the department, chief physician and doctoral supervisor, and his biography sets out his clinical scope in coronary and structural valve intervention. That is a statement of role and scope, not a promise that he will perform any particular procedure for a particular patient.
In electrophysiology, the hospital distinguishes a founder, an academic leader and a subgroup leader. Huang Dejia founded the program; Jiang Jian is described as its academic leader; Fu Hua leads a subgroup. These are not interchangeable titles, and none of them should be read as the current overall head of the department. Similarly, Liu Xingbin is named as a subgroup leader within the heart-failure and device program rather than as its overall chief.
The distinction is useful when preparing an enquiry. A valve assessment may draw on structural-heart expertise and multidisciplinary input; a rhythm question may be directed to electrophysiology; an existing pacing or heart-failure device question has another documented program. Ask which team would review the records and who would communicate its opinion, rather than assuming a famous academic name determines the entire care pathway.
Research work and what it means for a patient conversation
The valve team's research connects multimodal imaging with anatomical and clinical questions, including bicuspid-aortic-valve TAVR strategies. Its 2021 report also describes device engineering and guideline or consensus contributions. These are different forms of academic work, not a decision that a specific valve or catheter approach is appropriate for a new patient. The clinical team would need to explain how it would assess the individual problem.
Rhythm care has a separate documented development history through the AF center, stroke-prevention work and the provincial alliance. Device implantation and CRT also have training roles, while the coronary program includes chronic-total-occlusion intervention, imaging and functional assessment. These descriptions show how clinical questions are divided within cardiology; they do not choose an intervention for a patient who has not been assessed.
What this means practically is that a useful question is not "which is the best team" but "which group does my records suggest, and what would that group need to judge suitability?" A records-based review can clarify the clinical question. It cannot confirm that a procedure will be offered, that a specific device is available, or that a named clinician will take the case.
Honours and recognition, attributed carefully
The department records a Chinese Medical Science and Technology Progress Second Prize and a Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Third Prize. The valve team also records a Sichuan Science and Technology Progress First Prize. These recognitions belong to documented academic work; they should be distinguished from Chen Mao's individual talent-program recognition and from the department's historical reputation-list position.
The 2021 report records Chen Mao's 2018 National Innovation Talent Promotion recognition and national leading innovation-talent recognition. Alongside the valve program's research and guideline work, these provide specific background on its academic development. They do not determine which device, procedure or clinician a new patient would receive. The treating team must address that patient's diagnosis and the decision on which another opinion is requested.
An award explains recognized work, while the program's clinical scope helps identify a relevant assessment. Those are useful but different pieces of information. A patient comparing potential opinions can ask what the proposed consultation would cover and how the relevant group would review the records, rather than treating the award as an individual outcome estimate.
Practical questions before you plan care in China
Specify whether the question concerns a valve, rhythm disorder, heart-failure/device issue or coronary assessment. Include a short account of previous care and ask which existing reports the relevant group needs. Clarify whether a records-based opinion is possible, who would review it and what would require an in-person assessment. Urgent chest pain, collapse or deterioration needs local care rather than waiting for overseas planning.
If a valve or device is already part of another team's proposal, ask what the receiving clinicians can assess from that proposal and what they cannot confirm remotely. A listed program and a research example are not confirmation of access to a particular product. Acceptance, device availability and the clinical plan need case-specific confirmation before travel arrangements.
How independent coordination fits
ChinaSpecialistCare can help organise a cardiology enquiry, prepare records and coordinate appointment and interpretation arrangements after hospital acceptance. We are independent of the hospital and cannot guarantee a named clinician, device or outcome. An initial enquiry is free and does not require purchasing an optional proxy consultation.
