Zhongshan Hospital Cardiology: Coronary, Structural and Heart-Failure Teams

Zhongshan Hospital, a Fudan University-affiliated public general hospital in Shanghai, holds second place in the dated 2023 national specialty reputation list for cardiology. Its documented work covers coronary intervention, structural and valve disease, and heart failure, led by named clinicians. This article explains those directions and the questions an overseas patient should settle before seeking an appointment.

What kind of cardiology department is this?

Zhongshan Hospital is a Fudan University-affiliated comprehensive public hospital in Shanghai. A September 2017 Fudan University report marking the hospital's 80th anniversary records that it opened on 1 April 1937 and combines clinical care, research, teaching and management under a public-hospital mission. The same report describes anniversary academic exchanges in the cardiovascular, liver, kidney and pulmonary fields, which places cardiology within a broad academic institution rather than a single-purpose heart centre.

For an overseas reader, the useful signal is not a slogan but a dated reference point. In the 2023 national specialty reputation list compiled through Fudan, the hospital's cardiology specialty appears at position 2. That is a historical, dated statement about the specialty as a whole. It does not rank the coronary, structural or heart-failure teams against each other, does not rank individual clinicians, and should not be read as a current 2026 ranking or as evidence that any particular treatment is available to a particular patient.

The department's clinical identity is best understood through the named directions described on official Fudan pages: coronary artery intervention, structural heart and valve work, and heart failure mechanisms and management. These are distinct problems with different diagnostic pathways, so the first practical question for a patient is which direction their own records actually point to.

Coronary intervention and the Qian Juying profile

A Fudan University profile published in August 2024 describes Qian Juying as chief physician, professor and doctoral mentor, and, in the dated biography on that page, as hospital vice president and deputy director of cardiology. Her documented clinical focus is coronary artery intervention and diagnosis, alongside teaching. The same profile records research into coronary microvascular disease, intravascular ultrasound diagnostic research and development work on bioresorbable stents.

For a patient with stable or unstable coronary disease, the practical questions are concrete. Has a coronary angiogram already been performed, and is the film available? Has any prior stenting been done, and with what documentation? Is the current question whether intervention is appropriate at all, or a second opinion on a plan already proposed? Sending the angiogram images and the catheterisation report, not only a discharge summary, gives a reviewing cardiologist far more to work with.

Structural heart and valve disease: Zhou Daxin, Pan Wenzhi and Zhang Xiaochun

A Fudan University article published in June 2025, describing a cardiology clinical training team, names Zhou Daxin as a structural heart professor and a Shanghai Craftsman honoree, with documented directions in valve intervention and pulmonary hypertension. The same section identifies Pan Wenzhi with a deputy role and a focus on clinical innovation, and Zhang Xiaochun with research into tricuspid valve pathophysiology.

These three names describe a structural and valve programme rather than a single procedure. Valve intervention and pulmonary hypertension are different clinical problems; tricuspid pathophysiology research is a further, more specific area. A patient with aortic stenosis, mitral regurgitation, tricuspid disease or pulmonary hypertension should therefore expect the receiving team to clarify which service is relevant, rather than assume that one named clinician covers every structural condition.

The training-team article also mentions Lin Dawei, then a 2025 doctoral graduate entering residency, in the cardiology training section. He is not a senior chief, and awards mentioned in that article are not attributed to the mentors. This distinction matters when reading Chinese institutional news: a training team article lists people at different career stages, and a name appearing in it does not by itself establish who will make a treatment decision.

Practical preparation for structural heart questions centres on imaging. Echocardiography reports with measurements, any cardiac CT performed for procedural planning, and the most recent clinical assessment are the documents a valve team would typically want to see. Whether a specific device or procedure is suitable, available and appropriate is a decision for the treating clinicians after their own assessment; this article cannot establish device availability or candidacy.

Heart failure: Sun Aijun and the 2025 national science prize

In July 2026, Fudan University announced that a project titled Creation and Application of Key Technology System for Heart Failure Mechanisms, Diagnosis and Treatment received a 2025 National Science and Technology Progress second prize. Zhongshan Hospital is listed as first institution and Sun Aijun as first contributor. Ge Junbo is not the first contributor to this project, and the award should not be attributed to him.

The same announcement describes the project's scientific content: mitochondrial energy-metabolism mechanisms, risk recognition, genetic findings involving ALDH2 and SCN5A, diagnostic research and research into individualised rehabilitation. These are research directions. They do not establish that a genetic test is appropriate for every patient, that any supplement or metabolic therapy should be used, or that a particular rehabilitation programme produces a given result. A patient reading about ALDH2 or SCN5A findings should treat them as questions to raise with the treating cardiologist, not as a self-directed test list.

Heart failure is also where the department's academic and clinical identities intersect most clearly. Ge Junbo is recorded in a May 2026 Fudan University report as a Chinese Academy of Sciences academician and cardiology director, leading a cardiovascular clinical teaching team for Fudan's eight-year medical students. That report describes integrated teaching of morphology, physiology, differential diagnosis, clinical reasoning, guideline critique and frontier techniques. It is a statement about education and leadership, not about patient outcomes.

For a patient with heart failure, the useful records are the ones that show trajectory: serial echocardiograms with ejection fraction and chamber measurements, natriuretic peptide results over time, medication history including what was tried and why it changed, any device evaluation, and the current functional status. A single old report rarely answers whether a patient should travel for assessment.

Research, teaching honours and how to read them

The department's documented honours are largely team and teaching recognitions, and their dates matter. A September 2025 Fudan University report records that the Zhongshan cardiology teaching team was named a national Huang Danian-style university teacher team, held a National Natural Science Foundation innovative research group designation from 2015, Education Ministry innovation team building in 2013 and 2017, and a Shanghai strategic team designation in 2019, alongside regional model-worker innovation workshop and labour-union worker pioneer honours. The report also records a new 2025 recognition, the Shanghai Health System Advanced Collective for Zhongshan cardiology. The other listed honours are historical, not new 2025 awards.

Separately, a January 2025 Fudan University report records that at the 13th Shanghai Science Education Innovation Awards, Ge Junbo received a Science Communication Outstanding Person Award. The same report describes an academician science education base, a Cardiovascular Health Alliance, and public education and remote professional training. This is a science-communication honour. It is not a clinical efficacy measure and not a national science prize.

These distinctions are worth holding onto when comparing hospitals. A teaching award speaks to how a team trains doctors; a research prize speaks to a body of scientific work; a professional fellowship speaks to peer recognition. None of them tells an individual patient what will happen in their own case. A responsible clinician can and should discuss evidence-based risk and expected outcomes with a patient; this article simply does not supply individual predictions.

One further caution concerns the 2023 reputation list. It is a dated historical reference for the specialty. It is not a comprehensive hospital ranking, not a current 2026 statement, and not a ranking of the coronary, structural or heart-failure services described above.

Practical decisions before seeking a Zhongshan cardiology opinion

The most useful first step is to define the clinical question precisely. Is it whether coronary intervention is indicated, whether a valve procedure is suitable, whether heart failure management should change, or whether a second opinion is needed on a plan already proposed elsewhere? Each question calls for different records and possibly a different subspecialty team, and a vague request for a cardiology appointment tends to produce a vague reply.

Records should be sent as complete documents rather than summaries where possible: catheterisation films and reports, echocardiography reports with measurements, cardiac CT or MRI where performed, serial laboratory results, the current medication list with doses, and a short chronology of symptoms and admissions. For structural questions, imaging is central. For coronary questions, the angiogram is central. For heart failure, the trend over time is central.

Several administrative points cannot be assumed and should be asked directly. Does the receiving team accept records in English, or is a translation needed? Which campus and which clinic would see this problem? What does the hospital's own written plan and fee scope include? These are questions for the named provider, not facts this article can settle. Individual suitability, alternatives and any restrictions are for the treating clinicians to determine after assessment.

Urgent or worsening cardiac symptoms call for local emergency assessment, not overseas travel planning. A records-based review is a way to clarify a question; it does not establish hospital acceptance, procedure candidacy or a treatment date.

Cardiology care in China for international patients

How ChinaSpecialistCare can help with this assessment

ChinaSpecialistCare provides independent coordination for overseas patients seeking a cardiology assessment in China, helping organise records, clarify the clinical question and request a specialist appointment. This is non-clinical coordination, not hospital ownership or official representation. Clinical decisions, suitability and fees remain with the treating hospital and its clinicians.
